Artists' Licensing Group: A New Opportunity

by David Lesh

Since the birth of the Illustrators' Partnership of America, the organization's key mission has been the development of a licensing agency that would truly represent the best interests of artists as they seek better ways to market and license the rights to their work. The recent founding of the Artists' Licensing Group is just the beginning...

1. ALG is an artist-friendly licensing agency that was formed to create a licensing process that affords visual artists control over the distribution of their work and economic rewards for their work. ALG's founders include artists, and will continue to include artists in its Board of Directors and management.

2. The Artist Agreement aims at protecting professional artists’ interests and providing a safe and artist-friendly venue for artists to market their work.

3. With the input of visual arts professionals, ALG will strive to solicit licensing opportunities for their artwork, negotiate license terms and conditions, and collect and distribute license fee payments.

4. Subject to the rights granted in favor of ALG under the Artist Agreement, artists shall retain ownership of their copyrights and all other rights with respect to the artwork that is the subject of this Agreement.

5. In furtherance of ALG's goals of being an artist-friendly licensing agency, ALG has established the Value Point Award Program for eligible participants. The purpose of the program is to provide visual artists with a voice in the management of ALG as well as provide an economic benefit to artists commensurate with the quality and quantity of the artist's work that is subject to the Agreement.

6. ALG will strive to protect the intellectual property rights of its members through collective action, ensure respect of and protection of copyright rights, and restore control to individual artists to dispose of rights to their works on the artists’ terms and in the artists’ chosen venues.
